The Cosplay Studio Experience Recap

On September 20 th , I had the pleasure of being a featured photographer at “ The Cosplay Studio Experience .”   Brynt Cox Photography brought together six top studio cosplay photographers for a day at Reign the Venue, giving cosplayers a chance to experience a studio shoot without the big studio price tag.   It also lets photographers bring out their studio lights, modifiers, and other cool toys to work with a variety of cosplayers.   Usually, cosplay photographers are limited by venue restrictions, convention policies, and equipment weight, but this event eliminated all of that except equipment weight; you still had to carry everything into the venue.   Each photographer got a 10x10 space to work and create.   For this event, I used: Canon R6 24 - 105mm lens Surface Pro Tether Cables Westcott FJ400 Westcott FJ200 Westcott Trigger Rectangular soft boxes Bell reflector with grid Platypod Gels Backdrop stand Hand-painted grey ca...

Workshop with Witchy Set

On August 29th, I led a photography set-design workshop for the Costume & Camera group. The workshop focused on setting up a basic studio at home, then building a full set to match a cosplay or theme.  As part of the workshop, I did a live demonstration showing how I build a set and then use the set during a session.   For this workshop, I used: Canon R6 24 - 105mm lens Surface Pro Tether Cables Spyder Color Checker Westcott FJ400 & FJ200 Strobes Westcott Trigger Rectangular soft boxes Platypod Gels Backdrop stand Hand-painted grey canvas backdrop 3 Light stands Clamps Fabric Flowers Fake candles Fake Skull Bottles LED light Posing Block Floor Drop Boxes Camera Settings: For this shoot, I used ISO 100 with an aperture of F8 and a shutter speed of 1/250s.  My focal lengths ranged from 39mm to 94mm, with 50mm being the most common. Set Up: This shoot was a demonstration, so I kept the set small and ...

Meridian Hill Park

On September 13th, I attended the Costume & Camera event at Meridian Hill Park in downtown DC. I have always wanted to shoot at Meridian Hill, as it has a lovely stepped waterfall and just looks nice.  However, the day was super hot and humid, and it didn’t help that I was having an IBS flare.  I almost canceled but toughed it out, which was good because the photographer-to-cosplayer ratio was way off, more cosplayers than photographers. Another nice thing was getting to see one of my favorite people to work with after their two-year hiatus. For this event I used: Canon R6 24 - 105mm lens Cannon speed light Platypod Handel Assistant Camera Settings: This shoot started at 2:00PM in the afternoon in downtown DC.  I ended up about 15 minutes late because I had to find parking and a bathroom, both hard things to find sometimes. It was super sunny with a few clouds, even though the forecast called for rain, which added to the humidity. The park also ha...
