Day 4: To Porto

Crossing the Bridge into Porto

Today we got up at 7:00AM, had breakfast and packed up our stuff to start the journey to Porto.  The first thing we had to do was check out of the hotel, then call an Uber to take us to the rental car place.  Just a small shout out to the staff of the hotel for being able to accommodate receiving an Amazon package for me. I was able to order a camera battery charger off amazon and have it delivered to the hotel, the staff checked the address to ensure it was correct and received the package for me. Great service in that regard.  Now back to the trip.

We picked up the rental car from AVIS around 9:30 AM.  They gave us a little Citron hatchback which is about the right size for driving around Portugal and its cities, while still handling all our luggage.   We did get the extra insurance, just for piece of mind.   From there we exited the city of Lisbon and got on their version of a freeway.   Our first stop was Nazare where we saw the Nossa Senhora da Nazare church/convent and a sea cliff overlook.  We didn’t go to beach, but the beach is where they hold a lot of world surf competitions because the waves can reach 90 feet in height.  We also grabbed a quick lunch in Nazare, at a Burger King.  Every time we go to grab food for lunch there seems to be a herd of middle/high schoolers also doing the same thing.  Teenagers can be utterly annoying in large numbers.

Ourside of the Church

After lunch we headed to Alcobaca to see the first Gothic Church and Monastery in Portugal. The monastery was nice, and very cool inside, thanks to the thick stone walls and high ceilings filtering the heat from the day.  Just so you know the temperatures have been in the upper 80s and low 90s so far during the trip, resulting in us not doing as much sight seeing as we would normally do.  It is just too much between the sun and the heat.   After visiting the church and monastery we got back on the freeway towards Porto.

We arrived in Porto a little after 4:30PM. Thankfully, traffic wasn’t too bad, and we were able to find the recommended parking place since the hotel doesn’t have parking.    After checking in and getting to our room, which had a gift of a slice of cake and a small bottle of port, we unpacked and picked a place for dinner.

Gift in our room

It is one of our trip traditions to see how other countries interpret Mexican food, so we found a “Mexican” restaurant that was 2 minute walk away.   Jim had a burrito and I had a salad.  Consensus it was close to American Mexican restaurant food with a few peculiarities like oranges and arugula on the salad, plain white rice served with the burrito, and the beans lacked a Mexican flavor.  Overall, we rate the restaurant a 3.5 out of 5 stars.   From there it was back to the hotel.

Tomorrow, we start the day with a walking tour.

Cobwebs Everywhere

On October 7 th , I did a studio spooky session with Coralinx Cosplay .   The central theme of this shoot was a pretty goth girl who had a fondness for spiders and decorating with cobwebs, making it a perfect Halloween session.   Note: Cobwebs are defined as abandoned or old spiderwebs that have collected dust.   Many cobwebs are the result of comb-footed spider (i.e., black widows) that make irregularly shaped webs.   Spiderwebs are active structures built to catch prey.   (Source: Western Exterminator Company) For these sessions, I used: Photography Equipment Other Equipment Cannon R6 24-105 mm Lens Transmitter/Trigger 2 Westcott FJ400 2 Phottix Strobes 2 strip boxes 2 rectangular soft boxes 2 c-stands 3 light stands Backdrop stand Black seamless 2 Westcott silicon gels Tether cable Laptop Laptop holder Sandbags A-clamps Spyder Color checker Fake cobwebs Table ...

2025 Year in Review and Looking Forward to 2026

This year was a bit interesting especially since during the day, I’m a government employee, which resulted in a lot of stress and a 42-day furlough.  I didn’t attend as many cosplay events with the D.C Cosplay group, now Costume and Camera, as I normally would have, due to schedule conflicts.  However, I traveled up to Poughkeepsie, New York for two photo events, one of which I was a featured photographer.  I attended two conventions, one of which didn’t turn out as expected and the other just confirmed my decision to take a break from it.  Though happily I did a lot of studio work this year, which I enjoyed.  But on the other hand, I lost my dear “studio supervisor”, my dog Teddy.  He liked to great clients and then “supervise” while lying/sleeping in his bed. I also started to work on the business side of my photography work, by investing in a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) site to manage bookings, schedules, and payments. No more trying to juggle...

Moon Goddess

On September 11, I did a fantasy moon goddess session with Emma. The inspiration for this shoot was the moon and all the fake cloud tutorials that were flooding my feed.   For these sessions I used: Photography Equipment  Props/Miscellaneous Cannon 80D Trigger 2 strobes 2 speedlights 3 c-stands Bell reflector Beauty dish 2 flags 2 gels (blue & magenta) Grid (5-degree) Backdrop stand Fuzzy white backdrop Printed backdrop A-clamps Sandbags paper mâché moon 2 pillows 8 DVD cases 5 pounds of fiber fill (aka. fluff) silver dress Ewa Jobko silver circlet This session revolved around the love of the moon, and I wanted to make sure the model had a moon to love, thus I made one.   To make the moon, I bought one of those 24-inch round balloons, blew it up, and covered in three layers of white tissue paper using a standard paper mâché technique.  When covering th...
