Last Session of the Year: A Maid

On December 14th, I did a very cute and pink studio session with Maid Adelynn from Heart Strings Café.  This session was also my last session of the year and was a great way to wrap up the year.

For these sessions, I used:

1 bell reflector

2 c-stands

Laptop

Laptop holder

Sandbags

A-clamps

Spyder Color checker

Flowers

Styrofoam blocks

Dowl rods

Paper cherry blossoms

Pink Tulle

The setup

I wanted to go simple and high key for this session, because it was supposed too bright, cheery, cute, and playful. So, I started with the background which was a fuzzy white backdrop, which covered the floor, over which I hung a hand-painted pink canvas backdrop.  I then draped some tulle across the backdrop. I then added two flower accent pieces constructed of Styrofoam and dowl rods covered in paper cherry blossoms and pink flowers.

For the lighting I kept it simple by using only two lights.  My main light was a large octabox about 45-degrees off to my left raised up and angled down towards the model.  The second light, which was my fill, only had a simple bell reflector on it and was pointed up to the ceiling to act as a bounce fill. This set up gave me a nice even spread of light across the model and the backdrop.

Camera Settings

I love studio sessions because I can dial my settings in and go.  For this session I went with ISO 100, a shutter speed of 1/200s and an aperture of F8.  I went with these setting because I knew I would be capturing movement later in the session. Everyone loves a good twirl.  My focal length ranged from 29mm to 105mm with most images being taken at 43mm.

The Photos

One of the reasons I love simple studio sessions like this one because editing is usually a breeze, since I can basically adjust one image and apply those changes across the board in Lightroom.  For these images I adjusted the white balance and upped the exposure just a tad.  I also increased the vibrancy just a little to make the pinks pop. I also used my color checker to ensure the colors and skin tones were accurately represented.  I also tried my best to crop images to an 4x5/8x10 size to fit on Instagram.  The real challenge of editing these images was in Photoshop, trying to get rid of the seam where the two halves of the paper flowers met, since I didn’t want white lines running down the center of the flowers.  I also used some AI to extend the background slight, because the pink backdrop is about 5-feet wide and occasionally the pose would extend beyond that. But overall, this was an easy session to edit, but hard cull because there were so many cute images.

Let’s start with the cupcake images, because who doesn’t like throwing cupcakes in the air. Note no cupcakes were harmed in making these images because they are fake.   We did this several times, and I then composited shots to get the right number of cupcakes in the air and on the ground.  Also to ensure the skirt fell just right and she didn’t sink into the skirt, while she was sitting, I had her sit on a cushion for a little extra height.

While we are talking about cupcakes, how about this next image.  I like this one because it is cute yet a little mischievous due to it being a back shot and the model looking like she is hiding the cupcake.

As I mentioned earlier, I knew I would be doing some “action” shots during this session to show off the fluffy skirt.  In the image below I asked the model to hop/skip to add movement to the skirt.  I love the amount of flair we were able to capture in the image below.

This final image is just a simple head shot, showing a perfectly cute maid.

Wrap Up

This session was fun.  We created so many cute images it was hard to cull them down to a manageable level.  I had to ask myself which head tilt is cuter, the one to the left or the one to the right?  It was a perfect way to cap off the year.

Cobwebs Everywhere

On October 7 th , I did a studio spooky session with Coralinx Cosplay .   The central theme of this shoot was a pretty goth girl who had a fondness for spiders and decorating with cobwebs, making it a perfect Halloween session.   Note: Cobwebs are defined as abandoned or old spiderwebs that have collected dust.   Many cobwebs are the result of comb-footed spider (i.e., black widows) that make irregularly shaped webs.   Spiderwebs are active structures built to catch prey.   (Source: Western Exterminator Company) For these sessions, I used: Photography Equipment Other Equipment Cannon R6 24-105 mm Lens Transmitter/Trigger 2 Westcott FJ400 2 Phottix Strobes 2 strip boxes 2 rectangular soft boxes 2 c-stands 3 light stands Backdrop stand Black seamless 2 Westcott silicon gels Tether cable Laptop Laptop holder Sandbags A-clamps Spyder Color checker Fake cobwebs Table ...

Katsucon 2025 Wrap - Up

Katsucon 2025 didn’t seem as crowded as 2024, but I still wasn’t feeling it.  Katsucon will always have a special place in my heart, but I think I’m just bored with it, from a creative perspective.   While I still love working with cosplayers the location itself no longer excites me and I’m tired of fighting the crowds.  If I return to Katsucon 2026 I think I’ll just set up a studio in my room and do studio sessions.  I can be a lot more creative with a studio session, and I get to use all my lights.  So now let's talk about photography.   For Katsucon I was shooting with my Canon R6 with an 24-105 Canon RF lens, and I had a fisheye lens on me as well, but we will discuss that later.  I had two speedlights, one on camera which acted as a trigger 90-percent of the time and one on a light stand which my husband would hold during shoots. This year I booked 11 cosplay sessions and shot 869 frames.  I shot a range of ISOs from ISO 100 to ISO 800...

2025 Year in Review and Looking Forward to 2026

This year was a bit interesting especially since during the day, I’m a government employee, which resulted in a lot of stress and a 42-day furlough.  I didn’t attend as many cosplay events with the D.C Cosplay group, now Costume and Camera, as I normally would have, due to schedule conflicts.  However, I traveled up to Poughkeepsie, New York for two photo events, one of which I was a featured photographer.  I attended two conventions, one of which didn’t turn out as expected and the other just confirmed my decision to take a break from it.  Though happily I did a lot of studio work this year, which I enjoyed.  But on the other hand, I lost my dear “studio supervisor”, my dog Teddy.  He liked to great clients and then “supervise” while lying/sleeping in his bed. I also started to work on the business side of my photography work, by investing in a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) site to manage bookings, schedules, and payments. No more trying to juggle...
