Day 6 - To Polebridge

Today was a very rainy day, with it raining off and on till about 2:00PM, so I didn’t get a sunrise photo this morning.  Instead we slept till about 6:15AM and got breakfast at 7:30AM and then drove up to Polebridge.   People drive up to Polebridge, which is about 35 miles from the Canadian border,  to get fresh baked goods.  We got a large huckleberry bear claw and a spinach pastry roll. Was it worth it to drive 15 miles on an unpaved, potholed, dirt road in the rain, in my opinion no. The bear claw was good, I haven’t eaten the spinach roll yet,  but not driving down a dirt road to some one building town, good.   After that little adventure we drove over to the Fish Creek area to hike the Rocky Point trail.  I wanted to hike this trail to see if it would be a good place to take a sunrise photo over Lake McDonald.  Sadly the point was facing the wrong direction for it to work well.   The best location will be from the boat launch in Apgar.

After the hike, we drove over to Apgar to eat at Eddie’s Grill & Cafe in Apgar.  By the way Apgar is one of the main lodging, information, and rental areas on the west side of Glacier NP.  The cafe was ok, it was standard park cafe food with sandwiches and burgers.  After lunch we drove up the Going-to-the-Sun road to see McDonald Falls and the Sacred Dancing Cascades and stopped in their little pull off areas.  However, I think the Silver Staircase Waterfall, along US Highway 2 about 30 minutes from our hotel, is better.  We drove to this waterfall after seeing the ones in the park.  On the way back from the Silver Staircase Waterfall,  we stopped at the Goat Lick wildlife viewing area.  Amazingly enough there were mountain goats, but mind you not at the sign telling you will see the goats.  You had to go slightly beyond the end of the viewing area to see the goat, but we saw big goats and a baby goat.  The goats were doing what the sign said, licking the cliff walls to get after the salt.   Amazingly enough I got more than goat butt pictures.  After seeing the goats we headed back to the hotel for the day.  Tomorrow we will travel to the East side of the park to go to the Many Glacier area.

2024 Year in Review and Looking Forward to 2025

This year felt a little off for me; I think it was because I was in a mental recovery mode.  I finished my graduate program in June and immediately went on a week-long vacation to Palm Springs.  I do not recommend Palm Springs in June; way too hot.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but the graduate program mentally and physically exhausted me, which I think showed in some of my creative work.  But being able to work with great people like Natalie Hanrion , Coralinx Cosplay , and Anastasia B kept me motivated.  While I didn’t attend as many Cosplay Photo Shoot events as in the past, the ones I did attend were helpful in keeping the creativity flowing.  I also took some time this year to reflect on a few things and will be making some changes for 2025. In 2024, I shot 6241 frames, which is a 30-percent decrease from last year.  I edited 3187 frames, which is a 40-percent decrease from 2023.  I think this year, I started focusing on being very min...

Snow Session

On January 9 th , Washu Cosplay and I did a slightly impromptu snow session at Great Falls National Park.   This was possible because of the passing of the Explorers Act which allows photography in a National Park with a model without a permit.   Before you get too excited, the law limits equipment and the size of the party; you are allowed your camera, tripod, and handheld lighting equipment, and the group can be no more than 5 people, which includes the photographer, model, and assistants.   So, there are no big lighting setups or big crews; for big shots, you will still need a permit.      For this session, I used: Photography Equipment Props/Miscellaneous Cannon R6 24-105 mm Lens Transmitter/Trigger 1 speed light 1 light stand     The set up For this shoot I was mixing flash and natural light.  In most cases, my model was partially backlighted by the sun.  Thus, I u...
